I went the opposite route. Body-weight and dumbbells/kettlebells at high intensity (heart rate 140-172 for 45 minutes) That worked for me. I like seeing the progression, and it has good after effects.
The only problem is I had to have a few work-outs because sometimes I am just too tired to do one of the bits. Though today I did it outside in -5 C ( 23F) weather and it felt pretty good.
